Traditional Mexican Bread of the Dead (Pan de Muerto)
By Said PĂ©rez
INGREDIENTS:

This bread, round and decorated with “bones” made from the same dough, is awesome.

1 teaspoon yeast
4 cups flour
¼ cup warm water
7 eggs
1 teaspoon salt
½ cup sugar
4 ounces butter

PREPARATION:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix the yeast with the warm water and a teaspoon of sugar. Make sure there are no lumps and that the mixture is homogeneous. In a separate bowl, mix the flour, salt, 6 eggs and melted butter with the sugar and yeast mixture. Knead the mixture to form the dough. Put the dough in a bowl and cover. Let stand for one hour until it doubles in volume. Set aside 1/3 of the dough to form the bones. With the remaining dough, make a ball. With the dough you set aside, shape the bones by adding a small ball at both ends and placing it on top of the big ball. Coat the dough with the final egg and put it in the oven to bake for 40 minutes. Remove from the oven and sprinkle with sugar. Return to the oven for 10 minutes. Remove, serve and devour it like you're a zombie in The Walking Dead.
